Developing Effective Learners

The National Research Council's book, How People Learn, places self-regulatory capabilities (such as planning the task at hand and recognizing one's ability to complete it) among the most important techniques for skilled learners of any age. The many intricate processes and numerous demands on attention that are a natural part of professional cooking generate many opportunities to improve one's self-regulatory skills while increasing concentration. The book also acknowledges the importance of acquiring problem-solving skills and of participating in a community where continual improvement is valued.

Cooking and food can become wonderful chances to improve upon our learning skills, regardless of age, gender, or culture. From grade school to the professional workplace, effective learning skills are fundamental to our continued success.
